My Irish Boyhood
Irish Cultural Society member Tom Phelan will entertain us with a recollection of his boyhood in Ireland in the 1940's and 1050's as he visits the Garden City Casino at our September meeting!
Tom, an author of six novels, will focus on his memoir, We Were Rich and We Didn't Know It. Born and reared in County Laois, Tom spent his formative years working with his wise and demanding father as he sought to wrest a livelihood from a farm that was often wet, muddy and back-breaking. It was a time before rural electrification, the telephone and indoor plumbing; a time when the main modes of travel were bicycle and animal cart; a time when small farmers struggled to survive and turkey eggs were hatched in the kitchen cupboard; a time when the Church exerted enormous control over Ireland. We welcome Tom's imagination and creativity to our first meeting of our season.
Join us on Wednesday, September 11th at the Garden City Casino. The meeting begins at 7:00pm, and is free and open to the public.
