The Irish Cultural Society is a group of your friends and neighbors who want to know more about their Irish heritage. The group, non-political by its charter, endeavors to bring together people with the common goal of learning about our roots and supporting Irish culture and study.

Our Next Meeting:
Irish Emigration to New York
Our member, and our speaker, Tom Gaffney, asks us to take an active part in his talk, Irish Emigration to New York in the 19th Century. He hopes we can engage with him in a back-and-forth discussion, our part being our family's New York emigration stories.
We have homework! - our anecdotes, our documents, our pictures will add color to Tom's expertise as a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide. Our neighborhoods, our Parishes, our relative's jobs made New York City an Irish town.
Tom Gaffney is general counsel at a title company in Garden City and a volunteer firefighter in Syosset. Some of us know Tom as a walking tour guide at the Five Points, a walk Tom will offer again in the future.
Join us on Wednesday, November 13th at the Garden City Public Library. The meeting begins at 7:00pm, and is free and open to the public.

The Meaning of Irishness by George E. Ryan
The members of the Irish Cultural Society and the members of the H.W. Wilson Foundation are pleased to announce the launch of the 2024 Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest.
This year our contest will challenge students to write an essay in which the writer identifies himself/herself through references to indicators or emblems of the writer’s heritage or interests. A model of such an essay of identity, The Meaning of Irishness by George E. Ryan, can be viewed by clicking here.
Contest entrants will write an essay built upon references to the things which people accumulate from their heritages and interests. Our model essay has references to the books, music, art and other cultural elements of Mr. Ryan’s Irish heritage. Entrants will write an entertaining essay which refers also to the indicators of heritage in their homes or to the signs in a room which show a person’s passionate interests. Indicators of heritage include religious symbols, foods, celebrations, languages and so much more. Indicators of passionate interests include reading material, special clothing, posters and so much more. Heritage need not be of another country– America, too, has produced emblems of an American heritage.
All entries must be received by March 17, 2024
